The frontier survival/revenge flick also opened in nine global countries this weekend to $20.2 million, giving it a worldwide total of $59.7 million.
Disney noted that The Force Awakens also was in record territory in key European markets – the highest grossing film ever in the United Kingdom, and number three within Europe. The Force Awakens, which has now opened in all major territories and is in its fourth week of release in many, had posted $1.733bn globally by the end of the weekend. Basically, this has been an fantastic weekend for DiCaprio, director Alejandro G. Inarritu, and The Revenant, as the movie went on to claim Golden Globes for DiCaprio’s grueling performance, Innaritu’s direction, and Best Picture (Drama) in addition to all its box office success. The movie premiered on December 18th and took less than a month to become the highest grossing film in the movie history of North America.
The Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg comedy ‘Daddy’s Home’ did well again in its third week. Domestically, it has pulled $39.5 million so far.
Fifth on the list was Sisters, with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, at $7.2 million its fourth week out.
Rounding out the top ten were: The Hateful Eight ($6.3 million); The Big Short ($6.3 million); Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip ($5.5 million); Joy ($4.5 million); and, Concussion ($3.1 million). The additional $15 million brings its domestic total up to a strong $116.3 million.
