Weekly Comment: Biden and Colbert’s Emotional Late Show Interview
U.S. Vice President Joe Biden has secretly met with Robert Wolf, a former UBS executive and major fundraiser for President Barack Obama, Bloomberg reported on Monday, one of the strongest indications yet that he is seriously considering a 2016 presidential bid.
Colbert’s faith, however, doesn’t stop him from making jokes about the Church – but he said he would stay away from the sacraments.
“He was a human being”, said Steve McMahon, a Democratic strategist and founding partner of political consulting firm Purple Strategies. More than anything, he’s authentic. For five years or so after a personal tragedy, likely referring to the loss of his wife and daughter, Biden said he didn’t have that level of courage himself. One of the most frequent complaints about Hillary Clinton, besides her botched handling of the email mess, is that she’s overly cautious and calculating.
It’s easy to say why so many like Joe Biden a great deal.
That struck a familiar note for people in Washington.
I hear a man saying I don’t know that I can trust myself to do this, that I might just run into someone who mentions my son’s name and I’ll burst into tears on the campaign trail.

On the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks on Friday, he expressed deep gratitude to firefighters in Manhattan who offered him consolation over his son’s death. He trailed off.
The question is how stupid do Biden and the New York Times think people are? “Except one guy wrote a little better than you: William Butler Yeats”. They have climbed high and fast, rarely missing or even pausing long on any rung of the ladder.
“I’ve taken too much of your time up….”
No, he may be better both at running for president and being president because he knows there are things more important than the job.
Biden is struggling with the decision at a time when his popularity is growing, according to recent polls. Colbert closed the interview by acknowledging his own desire that Biden run. On the Senate Judiciary Committee Biden presided over two contentious Supreme Court nominations, Justice Clarence Thomas and the Robert Bork, who conservatives believe was treated unfairly in his failed attempt to get appointed. It happened exactly 41 years ago, when Colbert was ten. Filling that need for now are billionaire Donald Trump on the right and the rise of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders on the left.
Biden has made no secret of the fact that barely three months after his son died from brain cancer, waves of grief still wash over him at moments not always predictable.
Colbert and Biden discussed various issues – the vice president could potentially run for president, but he’s unsure if he’s invested in the idea – but then they spoke about the death of his son, Maj. “Promise me you’re going to be all right”. Biden is in third, at 20.3 percent, but has seen rising support as speculation around a potential presidential run has swirled. “I marvel at the ability of people to absorb hurt, and most do it with an incredible sense of empathy”.
