Weight Watchers stock gains as Oprah loses 26 pounds
Weight Watchers International Inc. shares rose 20 percent after investor and spokeswoman Oprah Winfrey tweeted about losing weight using the program.
“I lost 26 pounds”, she adds, “and I have eaten bread every. single. day”.
As reported previously by the Inquisitr, Oprah Winfrey owns about 10 percent of Weight Watchers, plus holds a seat on the company’s board of directors.
But while we wait to see who has the last laugh, one thing is clear: of the $12 $22 million in unbooked intraday WTW gains for Oprah’s 15% stake, this amounts to about $460,000860,000 per pound of weight lost.
Shares jumped more than 100% back then, according to Business Insider.
The shares climbed $2.17 to $13.29 after the video was released, continuing a trend of Weight Watchers’ stock rising when Winfrey’s weight goes down.
Another Oprah video tweet in late December did help the company recover some of the loss.
The world’s biggest tech company forgot to show you something at its recent event, but a few Wall Street analysts and the Fool didn’t miss a beat: There’s a small company that’s powering their brand-new gadgets and the coming revolution in technology. Winfrey is a natural fit for the company: Her struggle with weight was a frequent topic of her former talk show.
So this so-called short squeeze was probably playing a role in Weight Watcher’s huge move Tuesday.
Winfrey posted the ad online Tuesday to her almost 31 million Twitter followers.
