Wenger Refuses To Criticise Cech
West Ham United capitalised on mistakes by new Arsenal new goalkeeper Petr Cech to secure a surprise 2-0 Premier League victory at the Emirates and leave the Gunners deflated on Sunday.
Cech’s performance in the loss to West Ham is a far cry from his usual opening-day displays.
The 16-year-old West Ham midfielder impressed on his Premier League debut in largely nullifying the collective threat of Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla, and Hammers boss Slaven Bilic praised his character in responding to the occasion.
However, Cech – relegated to second choice at Chelsea throughout last season – looked ill-at-ease as West Ham put the hosts to the sword.
“We were not good enough, we were not convincing”.
“We will respond to that accident”, said Wenger.
The goalkeeper signed from champions Chelsea was billed as the player who could make the difference for Arsene Wenger’s side as they attempt to be crowned champions for the first time in 12 years this season, but the Czech instead was beaten twice.
Arsenal legend Ian Wright has warned his former side against showing the same old deficiencies if they want to win their first Premier League title since 2004. “I think we are capable of coming back“, Mertesacker added.
“I can only repeat what I already said”.
“I have been aware of him from being in and around the Arsenal setup for a few years and he has also has experience of the Championship from loan spells with Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham”. I’m really pleased for the lad and I’m sure all his mentors all the way up, and his family as well, they’re pinching themselves as well. That was the case, too, as West Ham stunningly doubled their lead against the run of play just before the hour mark.
After the match, Oxford admitted to having to pinch himself as superstar Alexis Sanchez came off the bench to share a pitch with him.
“[Bilic] asked me to sit and talk to everyone to help get them into position, not to let Arsenal catch us out on the break, to keep it simple and not try to do too much”.
