Wenger will buy ‘at least one’ and hints at midfielder
The Gunners are believed to be on the cusp of bringing Basel midfielder Mohamed Elneny to the Emirates in a £7.4million deal.
And Wenger has since revealed that the club’s injury list is relenting players while he is active in the transfer market.
Despite the win Arsenal’s midfield pairing of Mathieu Flamini and Aaron Ramsey looked particularly vulnerable to the direct running of Georginio Wijnaldum and company, reinforcing the case of those who claim Wenger must improve his central midfield in the absence of Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla.
“Hopefully we are capable of doing something in the next 10 days”, Wenger told reporters.
He has played over 100 times for Basel’s first team and would also benefit Arsenal in the Champions League as he is not cup tied. Elneny has played a part in most of Egypt’s games over the past couple of seasons and should have been eligible for a permit on merit, but Egypt have fallen out of the top 50 in the Federation Internationale de Football Association rankings which makes a player of that nationality ineligible for direct permission. “Coquelin is starting to run, Carzorla hopefully mid-February…so hopefully we can add one, if needed two maximum”.
Arsenal’s injury concerns are easing as well, with star forward Alexis Sanchez nearing a return after recovering from a hamstring problem.
It is expected that he will be available for selection for the FA Cup clash against Sunderland next week.
