West Indies off-spinner Marlon Samuels reported for bowling action
West Indies all-rounder Marlon Samuels has been reported for a suspected illegal bowling action during the first Test match against Sri Lanka in Galle.
Samuels bowled 27 overs in Sri Lanka’s only innings and accounted for Dimuth Karunaratne – who scored a career-best 186 – with returns of 1 for 84.
This is the third time Samuels’ part-time off-spin has come under scrutiny.
The global Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday issued a statement confirming the news. He was subsequently suspended from bowling in worldwide cricket but after remedial work to his bowling action, was allowed to resume bowling in September 2011. According to the ICC, a report handed over to the West Indies officials cited “concerns over the legality” of the cricketer’s bowling action.
The 34-year-old was reported once more in November 2013 in the second Test against India in Mumbai necessitating a reassessment.
Since that decision, Samuels has just been bowling his off-breaks but he will now have to undergo tests with the ICC within the next 14 days. However, he will be allowed to continue bowling until the results of the tests are disclosed. Samuels has taken 41 wickets in 60 Tests and 85 wickets in 174 one-day internationals.
Scores in the match: Sri Lanka 484 beat West Indies 251 and 227 by an innings and 6 runs.
