West Nile virus detected in NH mosquitoes for first time this season
Many people have no symptoms or mild flu-like symptoms.
Eleven horses in Colorado have been diagnosed with West Nile virus.
The state Department of Health and Human Services says it is collaborating with the city’s health department on notifying people about the recent detection.
West Nile virus is most commonly transmitted to humans by mosquitoes.
The city is also asking residents to take precautions to avoid getting bites such as applying repellent.
Although a specific treatment or vaccine has not yet been developed to combat West Nile Virus, it can be cured through antiviral medications and pain relievers.
The Maryland Department of Agriculture, in cooperation with Anne Arundel and Baltimore county, has been expanding mosquito control spraying in certain areas due to evidence of the virus. It is bordered on the north by Fetzer Lane and Monet Drive; on the east by Picasso Drive; on the south by West Cypress Road; and on the west by Jordan Lane, 4th Street, and Orchard Park Drive.
District officials say that there is often a correlation between dry weather and spikes in West Nile. This number then increased to three towards the end of the month and now, the state currently has 29 reported cases. The virus may cause fevers, headaches and body aches, and in some rare cases, neurological damage or death.
Just last week, San Jose’s district officials conducted nighttime fogging operations after finding mosquitoes that tested positive for West Nile virus.
“There’s some thought that a wet season may contribute more to mosquito breeding and hence more virus transmission, but that’s not clear at this point”, Chan said.
The Health Director is warning residents to take steps to reduce mosquitoes around their home by disposing water containers, cleaning clogged roof gutters and taking other steps.
