Western New York man attempted to
Authorities in western New York say they’ve arrested a man on a charge of attempting to support the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS.
Agents from the Buffalo Office of the FBI executed a search warrant at a home on Olcott Street in Lackawanna Wednesday morning.
Federal authorities say they were tipped off by a resident who heard Nagi talking about his jihadi beliefs.
Prosecutors say 44-year-old Arafat Nagi, a U.S. citizen, attempted to support the terrorist organization.
“Unfortunately this is yet another occasion when the worldwide fight against global terrorism has returned to Western New York”. Nagi was arrested in 2013 for threatening to behead his daughter. Officers responding to the call later found a knife in Nagi’s vehicle.
Further investigation determined that Nagi pledged allegiance to ISIL and the leader of the terrorist group, Abu Bakr al Bagdadi.
Nagi allegedly first tried making contact with ISIS when he travelled to Turkey in October 2012.
His next trip, in August 2014, lasted almost two months, according to the DOJ.
He had also purchased military gear including combat boots, a machete and night vision goggles, the department said, and expressed outrage at the killing of rebels in Yemen, which he blamed on the U.S.
