Western New York Man Legally Changes Name to Darth Vader
“I don’t want to give anything away”.
He grew up in and out of foster care, living in eight different foster homes and attending more than a dozen schools throughout his childhood. He spent years working as a handyman and in security. According to the GoFundMe page, Vader is a 13-year cancer survivor and is now an outpatient at Strong Memorial’s Wilmot Cancer Center.
He’s stable for now. His condition is manageable, he said, but will eventually require a bone marrow transplant.
Vader was diagnosed with leukemia in 2002 and tries to live up to the toughness associated with his chosen name by running in half-marathons and competing in endurance events.
To date, he has completed 45 Tough Mudder obstacle courses, including several with his daughter Alexis Welch, 20.
“He had a good run”, Harbaugh said. “It’s good. I’ve seen it twice”, he said.
Vader, 43 – formerly known as Eric Welch – chose the name because he is a big fan of the sci-fi fantasy series and always gravitated towards the Sith Lord’s character.

Vader said he did have to sign an affidavit saying he wouldn’t use the name to make money.
