Wham’s Last Christmas played on repeat by DJ Joe Kohlhofer in Austria
Joe Kohlhofer, a DJ on Antennae Carinthia in southern Austria, barricaded himself into his studio last week by blocking the door with a chair, and began his 8am show by playing Wham!’s ‘Last Christmas’. His bewildered producer and co-host had to watch through a glass partition as the station was bombarded with hundreds of angry calls about the Wham-fest with listeners begging him to play something else.
The marathon came to an end when Kohlhofer’s 4-year-old daughter called and said she didn’t like the song, The Independent reported.
Told the DJ: ‘I wanted to play it all day, but because I love my daughter so much I gave in to her request.’ .
The stunt was apparently unplanned as the station manager has said Kohlhoffer may face “consequences” for his actions.
As a result, he said he felt a bit of festive music was in order, which is when the Austrian DJ barricaded himself in and proceeded to play Last Christmas non-stop for his entire two-hour show.
Nach 24x Last Christmas in zwei Stunden bedankt sich das Antenne-Team nochmals recht herzlich bei Joe Kohlhofer!
Even then, he played the song one final time after seeing he’d “only” managed 23 renditions.
It is believed Kohlhofer now holds the somewhat undistinguished world record for the most times the song has been played in a row on radio.
It is not the first time Wham’s Last Christmas has become newsworthy in Europe.
