What A Rock! Michigan Man Lugs 93 Pound Petoskey Stone Off Beach
This “Pure Michigan” souvenir took some effort.
The Petoskey stone is beloved here in Michigan.
A man named Tim O’Brien of Copemish, Michigan is a rock hunter.
Tim O’Brien might be regretting the fact that he talked to reporters about the 93-pound Petoskey stone he found near Northport, Michigan.
According to the Grand Rapids Press, O’Brien discovered the vast Petoskey a week ago, half-buried in sand several feet out in the lake.
He then came back another day with his girlfriend, but the waves made it so he couldn’t locate it. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources land Use Rules allow rock collectors/hunters to collect up to 25 pounds per year, per person of aggregate.
Then on Tuesday, September 22, he went back a third time with a trowel and managed to dislodge the rock.
A small Petoskey stone was photographed on President Obama’s desk in 2013. Though it might be too big to polish, he plans to put it in his yard for decoration.
