What exactly does the UN Ambassador do in the federal government?
“Governor Haley has done a tremendous work as South Carolina’s first female and Indian American Governor and she will surely succeed as the top diplomat at the United Nations”, said Sanjay Puri, chairman of the US India Political Action Committee (USINPAC).
Nikki Haley has been tapped to serve as Donald Trump’s USA ambassador to the United Nations.
US President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team announced the appointment earlier on Wednesday, praising Haley’s “proven track record of bringing people together”. But his choice of wealthy activist Betsy DeVos, a champion of alternatives to local government schools, as education secretary, was another victory for social conservatives.
The president-elect also nominated a MI education philanthrophist to be his secretary of education, signaling his administration would strongly push charter schools and vouchers for private schools.
She is the first Indian-American to be appointed to a Cabinet Level Position to any United States administration.
During a news conference in October about Hurricane Matthew, Gov. Haley characterized her decision to vote for Trump in practical rather than enthusiastic terms.
There’s no legal requirement to do so but past United States presidents have set aside their business dealings.
Today’s picks came as Mr Trump worked to distance himself from the “alt-right”, a movement of white supremacists who continue to cheer his election. Her confirmation would also put Lt. Gov. Henry McMaster, a loyal Trump supporter, into the governor’s mansion. Trump says Haley “will be a great leader representing us on the world stage”.
With many suspecting Trump would fill his administration with loyalists, Haley is a surprising choice for the high-profile position.
Aides are divided between former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, who staunchly backed Trump’s candidacy, but whose business dealings have drawn scrutiny; and former MA governor Mitt Romney, viewed by many as a safe pick, but who harshly criticized Trump during the campaign. They also warned that she previously supported Common Core standards that Trump railed against during the campaign.
“The citizens of SC spoke”, she told reporters in 2013. And Romney was the furthest thing from supportive of Trump – delivering a much-publicized condemnation of the nominee as an unserious and risky figure in March. Haley denounced several of Trump’s campaign comments and urged voters to “reject the siren call of the angriest voices”.
Like many things with Trump, there was ring of mendacity and posturing around the development. There is going to be no time for the next United Nations ambassador to get up to speed on those issues.
“If you want to make a deal (between Israel and the Palestinians), then you have to have reasonable relationship with both parties not just one party”, Mansour said, adding the Palestinians were taking a wait and see approach with regard to the new administration. Among those under consideration: former New York Mayor and Trump loyalist Rudy Giuliani and 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, formerly an outspoken Trump critic.
Also, DeVos said she was privileged to accept her appointment.
