What Failed American Health Care Act Means for Missourians

GOP leaders and the Trump White House have been wooing the ideological opposite ends of the House Republican caucus to try to salvage a deal. It was a mistake, too, to test-run an Obamacare reconciliation bill in 2015-a bill that repealed much more of the act-for messaging purposes, when they were always too scared of such a harsh bill being signed into law.

Our politicians are set to vote today on the American Health Care Act, to “repeal and replace” Obamacare.

“President Trump is keeping his promise”, went the sole Obamacare ad from the group that appeared online Friday morning, with no additional details behind it.

“I’m shocked with what Mr. MacArthur’s done”, said Rep. Bill Pascrell, a Democrat from Paterson who battled against the bill in the House Ways and Means Committee.

But if the first bill dies in the House, the broader message could be devastating for both Trump and House Republicans.

Carbajal, never shy about criticizing the bill, called Friday’s non-vote “a victory for the American people”, but cautioned, “It’s a near-term, short-term victory, but it’s not necessarily final”.

“At the same time, I’m disappointed in many of my Republican colleagues for failing to support a good bill backed by President Trump and many others”.

Oh, so as far as this House Republican is concerned, Republicans will pass their ridiculous health care bill, and then they’ll explain to people what’s in it.

House Speaker Paul Ryan abruptly pulled the bill as it appeared all but certain to be defeated. This includes 673 Republicans and 829 Democrats. I came here to govern and I’m disappointed that we came up short. “House Republican, particularly members of the Freedom Caucus, were today’s big losers”.

While Planned Parenthood is barred from using federal funds for abortions, conservatives argue that any federal money for other health services frees the organization up to use its own money on abortions.

Hours before the scheduled vote on Friday, Ryan paid a visit to the White House to inform the president that the bill still lacked the support to survive the House vote-despite the duo’s best efforts.

“Bad things are going to happen to Obamacare”, said Trump, calling out the large premium increases and insurer defections that plagued the exchanges this year.

“To be quite frank, I still feel like it could have been done better”, MacArthur said before the vote. They didn’t answer this question, so they got what conservatives dubbed “Obamacare Lite”.

Trump added on Twitter, “This is finally your chance for a great plan!”

“It impacts real people’s lives and it impacts finances”, said Dahod.

The bill is the first foray into legislation for Trump, who took office on January 20 with no political experience.

With the American Health Care Act scheduled for a vote Thursday afternoon, elected officials on both sides of the aisle engaged in an intense last-minute debate over that bill, which would repeal and replace Obamacare. About 20 million Americans gained insurance coverage through the law.

According to The State of Health Coverage in the Mid South, a recent policy brief from the Hope Policy Institute, almost 80,000 MS residents gained health insurance coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace past year. In Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties – Carbajal’s congressional district – it dropped from 16.5 to 9.4 percent.
