What Is VOICE? Donald Trump’s New Office Has Undocumented Immigrant Activists Worried
It was hinted earlier in the day that VOICE would work with ICE as a liaison with “known victims of crimes committed by removable aliens”, presumably to highlight specific crimes when immigrants were involved.
The Obama administration came into office believing that it could pass comprehensive immigration reform if administration officials could just reassure Republicans they could be trusted to enforce immigration law. The president has already signed executive orders that would dramatically expanded the pool of immigrants targeted for deportation and set in motion the building of a wall along the US-Mexico border.
When the New York Times asked Trump’s deputy press secretary, though, she said that she had not heard his speech. This is a new program that Trump’s administration wants to put into action.
There are so many mendacious falsehoods embedded in this it is hard to know where to start. Trump is not inclined to include a path to citizenship for most of the people in the USA illegally, according to reports, but would consider providing one for those who were brought to the U.S.as children by their parents.
But Trump said that wouldn’t be the case because there has to be “a softening on both sides”.
Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said the immigrant community is “rightfully scared” of what President Trump has done.
Investments that might help stabilize high-crime neighborhoods are exactly what Illinois Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth called for in response to Trump’s threat to send “the feds” into Chicago, a city the president nearly always mentions when talking about violent crime.
“The president’s brief comments on the issue came up during a White House lunch meeting with a group of Democratic and Republican senators that also touched on the nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch to serve on the Supreme Court and the nation’s opioid epidemic, according to participants”. The president only addressed one aspect of immigration legislation: the need to reform legal immigration to a “merit-based immigration system”. And they really, really don’t believe in amnesty – or compromise.
Democrats passed the Affordable Care Act in 2010 when they had majority control of both houses of Congress, as well as the White House. But to do that, Trump would have to go around Bannon and Miller. He asserts that the United States didn’t even have a border before his inauguration, in defiance of anything resembling reality. But Tapper and Blitzer wrote on CNN that “those who aren’t serious or violent criminals could stay in the United States legally, hold a job and pay taxes, without having to worry about being deported”.
The large supply of foreign graduates – either immigrants or guest workers – pushes many middle-aged American professionals out of their careers and pushes younger American graduates into different careers with lower salaries.
