What people are saying about White House call for inquiry
The Republican president alleged on Saturday, without offering supporting evidence, that Democrat Obama ordered a wiretap of the phones at Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign headquarters in Trump Tower in NY.
Trump made the wiretapping accusation in a series of early morning tweets on Saturday amid expanding scrutiny of his campaign’s ties to Russian Federation. “Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!” one tweet read.
The former president has stayed out of the limelight following Trump’s inauguration and decided against replying to the president’s Twitter rampage, an Obama aide told the Wall Street Journal. A spokesperson for President Obama flatly denied the claims. “This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!” House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., at a press conference Tuesday, seemed to downplay Trump’s tweets – while announcing his committee would hold its first public hearing March 20 on the broader issue.
Trump made the allegations in a series of tweets, but did not provide any evidence to substantiate his claims. “What he said was President Obama directed eavesdropping surveillance, illegal surveillance, of him, or friends, or other people at Trump Tower or on the Trump campaign”.
Trump’s assertion appears to stem from conservative media outlets, such as Breitbart, and anonymously sourced reports on British blogs. The existence of a warrant to surveil Trump officials for allegedly improper ties to Russian Federation was first reported in November by Heat Street.
ABC host Martha Raddatz, who was interviewing Sanders, cited Heat Street as she tried to clarify where Trump got his information that he was wiretapped.
Barack Obama is furious over allegations by his successor Donald Trump that the Trump Tower was wiretapped ahead of presidential elections, CNN quoted sources close to the former president.
It began with Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ decision Thursday to recuse himself from any investigation of Russian meddling during the campaign – after revelations he spoke twice with Russia’s ambassador to the us previous year.
Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton, also on the Senate Intelligence Committee, told “Fox News Sunday’s” Chris Wallace he has “seen no evidence” that the Trump campaign successfully conspired with the Russian government to defeat Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.
You know, I don’t think he does, George.
Critics have accused Trump of trying to change the subject and distract attention from the unanswered questions surrounding his campaign’s contacts with Moscow.
