What Should The Padres Do With James Loney?
The name James Loney has certainly been thrown around by New York Mets fans as a possible fill in for the injured Lucas Duda, and it looks like they maybe get their wish.
ESPN.com’s Adam Rubin first reported the acquisition, adding that it was a trade between the Mets and Padres.
Tulowitzki is batting. 204 with eight home runs and 23 RBIs.
Wilmer Flores is expected to receive a shot once he returns from his own rehab assignment, as he was the backup first baseman by default after the Mets didn’t address the need during the offseason.
The 32-year-old batted. 342 with two homers and 28 RBIs in 158 at-bats with El Paso. But upon his release on April 3, Loney signed a minor league deal with the Padres on April 8 in hopes of fighting his way back to the big leagues.
Loney lacks Duda’s power but is a. 285 career hitter in the majors with 99 home runs, 251 doubles and a. 338 on-base percentage with the Dodgers, Rays and Red Sox.
After floating earlier in the week the idea that Conforto may work out at first base with Lucas Duda, who is now sidelined with a stress fracture in his lower back, manager Terry Collins emphatically said Friday that Conforto will not be used at the position.
The Mets only have to pay Loney the prorated portion of the major-league minimum for this year. NY had been starting utilityman Eric Campbell at first base after Duda’s injury.
Flores, by contrast, had a. 955 OPS against lefties previous year over 105 plate appearances to go with a. 637 OPS against right-handers.
