What they’re saying about Giants coach Tom Coughlin
Tom Coughlin announced on Monday that after 12 seasons and two Super Bowl titles, he is stepping down as head coach of the New York Giants.
The Giants wrapped up their third straight losing season on Sunday, the first time Big Blue had hit such a skid since the team posted eight straight losing seasons from 1973 to 1980.
Tom Coughlin’s reign as head coach of the New York Giants ended on Monday, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, and many of his former players poured their hearts out in farewell.
“I can tell you right now it has become the source of drive for me, is that when our players, whether they’re in their career, after their career, when they come back to me and they say: ‘Coach, I love you, ‘ ” Coughlin said.
Tom Coughlin is out as New York Giants head coach after 12 seasons. Coughlin was a wide receivers coach while Belichick was the defensive coordinator. But in the National Football League, things can get fixed quickly, and we expect to do that. This is a not a sad occasion for me. I would venture to say if we were to poll all of you in this room two years ago about who the top general managers in the league are, every one of you in here would have him on your list.
In a what-might-have-been season in the mediocre NFC East, the Giants’ failures came down to, as Coughlin often said, “finishing”. While with the Giants, Coughlin enjoyed quick success, making the playoffs in his second through fifth years.
The Tom Coughlin era in NY is over.
Coughlin was full of energy talking about his time with the Giants, the difficulties of the last few seasons and much more during the session, which naturally started five minutes ahead of the scheduled time. “And it is up to us now to turn that around and get back to where I think we should be”, he continued. Coughlin’s Giants were 3-2 against Belichick’s Patriots since 2004, including two Super Bowl victories.
Mara also said he would be willing to hire a college coach (“of course”) and opened up the possibility of changes from the personnel side. “I still think he’s capable of putting a great team together, and he’s going to get that opportunity”.
Tennessee Titans: The Titans said interim coach Mike Mularkey is a legitimate candidate as the organization is impressed with how he’s handled rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota. “We scored a lot of points, we were competitive in most of the games, and I thought we had a great game plan”.
