What time is ‘Fargo’ Season 2 premiere on TV?
Maybe Noah Hawley can attest to that now.
Hawley continued the tradition of an unassuming lead entangled in a crime with FX Networks’ 10-part “Fargo” TV series previous year, which debuted to critical praise.
Now that the second season is starting on Monday at 10pm, I’m glad that I got off my backside and made a decision to check it out. With the lens of Season 2 looking all the way back to 1979, Hawley turns a sharp eye to the moral turmoil of a nation-then and now.
In Fargo, Kirsten plays a ruthless, delusional beautician called Peggy Blomquist, who easily manipulates her husband Ed (Jesse Plemons). It’s set in 1979 with Patrick Wilson playing state policeman Lou Solverson (Keith Carradine played the retired father of Molly in Season 1). HBO’s game-changerTrue Detective was pilloried for an off-pitch second season, while Fox’s eminently marketable Scream Queens premiered to soft ratings. We’d run scenes the night before and everything. I did do “Drop Dead Gorgeous” awhile ago, so I was familiar with the accent even though we were so much campier with that then, we wanted this to be more real. “You have to cover up just to survive”, said Case. That, I was very weirded out by. She’s only 6 years old, as Lou’s daughter. “It is the movie!” It’s 100 percent fun and even better, it’s 100 percent Fargo. While you wait for the episode you can catch a sneak peek of tonight’s episode BELOW! Dodd’s not the type of guy you want to keep waiting. So my post-production process was hugely truncated. It’s a ’70s movie. “So, the name Fargo is not only evocative of a place, it’s evocative of a kind of story – a true crime story that isn’t true, where truth is stranger than fiction”.
Right. You use a lot of split screens and freeze frames, which are characteristic of movies of the time. Joe is part of the mafia in Kansas City, and they want to expand. “It seemed like all the disenfranchised groups, the American Indian movement and the Black Panther Party and second-wave feminism, it just seemed like everyone was going to fight and finally get their seat at the table”. I have not experienced this before so who knows, but it’s nice to be on something that takes awhile to roll out. Then there’s the time period, which is sort of like a main character. And also, how do you do it without relying on the obvious? Not out of arrogance but out of ignorance; I don’t watch a lot of TV. “They’re not cool at all”. They were like, “Your show was canceled”. Here are a few reasons you should already be obsessed with this show. That was a bad day. “She’s tough but, y’know, a girl”. But it’s also overused a lot. Because if you shoot a 15-year-old boy in peacetime, you go to jail.
So we have this Fleetwood Mac cue, “Oh well”, which is pre-Lindsey Buckingham Fleetwood Mac. But then, on the horizon, it’s Ronnie Reagan, who says, “We’re the greatest country that ever lived”.
Were you able to keep in touch with Noah when he wasn’t on set? “But I just think he was a really wonderful character”.
What did you think of the Fargo Season 2 opener and its stellar cast? You have the opportunity to move things around and play around with how things are done. Crime on the rise. So that’s where everybody was. And then along came Ronald Reagan and he said, ‘It’s not that complicated. We’re not the best people on earth.
“It’s literally the idea that soldiers are asked to do things in wartime that would be considered immoral in peacetime”, Hawley recently explained over the phone.
The first season arrived more quietly, shrouded in skepticism. It’s so seamless, the two of them. But I will say this: this cast is incredible. Plus, it’s a huge year and very ambitious. How many times have you watched it?
“The victor of a miniseries Emmy for its first year is well on its way to earning a second if the first four episodes are any indication”. It would be great if they did, but it’s not a requirement. And it was great to have that continuity. “I went online and bought a bunch of clothes made in New York”, she said. It really pays off. Otherwise you’re going to reach a point in the middle where suddenly you feel like you’ve run out of story. You have nothing to fear from us. There aren’t sexy sex scenes.
I always felt like we had to avoid that. Any time I needed him, I would call him. You just did everything. “When you do that for too long, it’s going to manifest in ugly ways and rear its head”.
Aside from that, it was pretty open for us.
I don’t know about you, but where I am right now I’m desperate for colder weather. But it doesn’t have to be that overt on any level. I know there are so many shows now with an anti-hero.
I think it’s an interesting look at a place. But I didn’t do the same thing again and weigh in for the story. They’re on a mission and I think she inspires him to think that they can get out of it together. In a decade that gave us original, prestige series like Breaking Bad and Mad Men, where massively talented auteurs like Steven Soderbergh have abandoned the confines of the foreign box office to work in a medium that was once viewed as lesser, why on God’s green earth are there 39 (and counting) TV series based on movies in the works?
