What to know before you watch the 2016 Oscars

Hollywood has certainly come a long way since McDaniel’s Oscar win, but there’s still progress to be made.

Host Rock will be challenged to keep the show lively, because the telecast may be short on suspense.

Calls for more minority faces were given a financial impetus by a new report which showed that films with more non-white casts earn more at the box office.

He mentions how when Weinstein Co. released three prestigious movies in one year whose stars were people of color – Mandela, Fruitvale Station and The Butler – all that was nominated out of those three movies was U2 – for best song. ‘I have no idea, but it has to make you think.’ he said.

TCM host Robert Osborne has said the Oscar picks need context to be understood. Even if nothing of outcome comes from this #blackout type thing, you’re still going to get stuff like this too. Similar to DiCaprio’s nomination for Best Actor, multiple predictions are already calling “The Big Short” the victor for Best Picture.

On 1997’s “The Chris Rock Show”, the comic went to SC to talk to people about their views on the state’s (then) policy of flying the Confederate flag. “He’s just going to do what he wants to do, and I support either way”. What he did for The Revenant was pretty incredible – and I feel he deserves it more than anyone else.

That is despite the box office success of big budget films with female leads, including Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” franchise, Shailene Woodley in the “Divergent” series, Scarlett Johansson s “Lucy” and newcomer Daisy Ridley in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”. Another of the Best Picture nominees, “Mad Max: Fury Road”, is forecast to take six awards: Costume Design, Film Editing, Makeup & Hairstyling, Production Design, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing.
