“It is normal that the person with the ticket can decide when and if they will go”, Games spokesman Mario Andrada told reporters. This year the men’s four major championships hosted players from a total of 30 countries; the four women’s majors contested, so far, have included players from 34 countries.

With the World Anti-Doping Agency recommending a blanket Olympic ban on the country’s entire contingent of athletes, they needed clearance from the International Olympic Committee to compete in Rio even though they had already taken up residence in the athletes’ village. This is golf in the Olympics.

“So I think after a splendid opening ceremony it’s a pretty good start for these Games”, he said.

“Justin Rose major champion and Olympic golf medallist would sound incredibly good to me”. But when it’s once every four years, I think it’s something you can certainly make an exception for.
