What to Watch on Monday, Day 8 at the Australian Open
Chinese qualifier Zhang Shuai has advanced to the quarterfinals at Melbourne Park after beating a limping Madison Keys 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The Canadian stormed to a two-set advantage before Wawrinka rallied to level the match and threaten a mighty comeback win.
“Today, when I woke up I felt quite drained, quite exhausted”, the Scot told reporters.
“He’s playing well. He’s very entertaining and he’s very hard to play”.
Raonic will face Gael Monfils in his next match.
The other two matches on the men’s side went as expected.
After capturing the first two sets, Ferrer broke Isner to go up 6-5 in the third set after the American double-faulted on break point.
“And then the match turned around in the fifth”.
Isner has only beaten the Spanish player once in eight meetings, indoors at the Paris Masters in 2011.
“I’ve been sick since 10 days now”, Wawrinka said, per Ravi Ubha of CNN.
Canadian Milos Raonic began his second week at the Australian Open with an epic five-set win over two-time major victor Stan Wawrinka.
Djokovic lost in the quarterfinals to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 2010, then won the tournament in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Williams has won 17 consecutive matches against the Russian.
It looked it around Melbourne Park and officials confirmed Saturday was the largest day attendance in the tournament’s history.
The last of the fourth round matches were played on the eighth day of the 2016 Australian Open.
Wawrinka had raised his game, and seemed to have found the key to returning Raonic’s serve, forcing break points in the opening game of the fourth before converting one a few games later.
Monfils delighted the Margaret Court Arena crowd with his acrobatic game, including a full-stretch dive that resulted in him needing an injury timeout for treatment on his right hand.
Wawrinka, who won his first Grand Slam title in Melbourne two years ago, wielded his signature one-handed backhand to devastating effect against Lukas Rosol as he rolled the Czech 6-2, 6-3, 7-6 (7/3). The Canadian has used that title-winning run in Brisbane as a springboard for a major tilt at the Australian Open.
Milos Raonic of Canada makes a forehand return to Viktor Troicki of Serbia during their third round match at the Australian Open tennis championships in Melbourne, Australia, Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016.
The 14th-seeded Azarenka will take on No. 7 Angelique Kerber in the quarterfinals.
To her elation, it was a Denver Broncos win. Before, the 2014 Australian Open victor “was struggling in the important points, important moments” with the forehand.
Johanna Konta eased past Denisa Allertova 6-2, 6-2 to become the first British woman to reach the fourth round in 29 years. “This is my first victory on Rod Laver Arena so that’s a nice plus”.
Raonic defeated Wawrinka’s fellow Swiss Roger Federer to win this month’s Brisbane International and remains unbeaten for the year after sealing victory in three hours 44 minutes.
The Spaniard is yet to drop a set in Melbourne this year but his next assignment will be his toughest yet against Andy Murray, who breezed past Australia’s Bernard Tomic in straight sets.
