What Virgin Galactic’s new spaceflight suit looks like
They’re made from Nomex Meta Aramid, a tough synthetic similar to Kevlar that’s resistant to heat and flame, and they’re designed for the pilot to be comfortable in seated position while allowing for movement.
Now in prototype form, the boots will be tested during upcoming Virgin Galactic test flights. How fancy. Watch the video to get a closer look at the suits.
The design is 3D-engineered for every twist and bend a pilot might make in flight. The boots are made with fire-resistant Nomex material, use lugs from outdoor gear company Traxion to give pilots grip when walking (instead of floating) around the cabin, and feature adidas’ own AdiPRENE cushioned insoles. Y-3 is a collaboration between Adidas and a Japanese fashion designer called Yohji Yamamoto.
Y-3 has created sleek-looking apparel for future pilots, operations team members on the ground, and astronauts. At Virgin Galactic’s Spaceport America terminal in New Mexico, they revealed prototypes of a fashion-forward flight suit and boots.

Yomamoto has a soft spot for a dark theme and this line is no different, as every stitch, shoe lace, zipper and inch of material is black.
To celebrate this unveiling, Virgin Galactic announced that passengers who paid the deposit will get limited-edition jackets.
‘Our evolution into a fully-functioning spaceline presents unprecedented opportunities to create original designs in support of our unique customer experience, ‘ said Adam Wells, head of design at Virgin Galactic.
Virgin Galactic has another big reveal set for next month, when the latest version of its SpaceShipTwo will be unveiled to the public.
‘At Y-3 we’re very inspired by uniform and work wear but to take inspiration from something is one thing – to try to provide a garment that experienced professional pilots will wear during test missions is something else, ‘ said Midwood.
