What we know about the OR wildlife refuge standoff
The three men and one woman have refused to leave without assurances they won’t be arrested. The occupation began almost a month ago. The FBI said it was negotiating with them.
Bundy and several other jailed leaders appeared Friday in federal court in Portland, where a judge denied their release.
The video, at about the 9:20 mark, shows Finicum jump out of his SUV with his hands outstretched from his sides after crashing into a snowbank. Ammon Bundy – the leader of the occupation – stepped out of one vehicle along with another protester, Brian Cavalier, and the driver, who has not been named.
Bretzing said Finicum eventually pulled the truck over and was ordered by officers to surrender.
It shows a white truck, allegedly driven by Mr Finicum, getting stuck in the snow after narrowly avoiding a police blockade.
Beckerman said she might also release citizen journalist Peter Santilli.
“He did have a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun in the pocket”, he said. “Agents and troopers on scene had information that Finicum and others would be armed”, said Bretzing. “The FBI and (Oregon State Police) tried to effect these arrests peacefully”.
The FBI posted the video to its YouTube channel (http://bit.ly/209MgEw ).
As the pickup approaches a police roadblock, Finicum veers his truck to the left, off the road and into the snow.
“At this time, OSP (state) troopers shot Finicum”. “That happened about 10 minutes after the shooting”.
“As is seen in the video, he makes a movement toward the inside-right panel of his jacket”, Bretzing said, “where there was located a loaded semi-automatic pistol”.
A third occupier, Ryan Payne, left Finicum’s truck at the first traffic stop and attempted to flee.
The judge considered the Idaho resident unlikely to follow her orders and return to OR for future court appearances.
The Deschutes County Sheriff’s department said in a statement that Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy Thursday and confirmed the 54-year-old Finicum’s identity.
“We want to protest this armed insurgency taking place by our federal government”, Soper said of the standoff at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge near Burns. Mr Bundy and Mr Cavalier were arrested.
The Oregonian identified those remaining at the refuge as David Fry, 27, of Blanchester, Ohio; and Sean Anderson, 47, his wife, Sandy, 48, and Jeff Banta, 46, of Elko, Nev.
Four militia members remain at the Malheur Wildlife Refuge on Friday morning despite calls from authorities and other militia members to surrender. They have demanded that they be allowed to leave without being arrested.
They cite their participation Ammon Bundy and others took part in the 2014 armed standoff with the government over grazing rights led by the Bundys’ father, Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy.
The charges against the defendants say the refuge’s 16 employees have been prevented from reporting to work because of threats of violence.
Federal Bureau of Investigation releases footage of police shooting OR militiaman LaVoy Finicum. An FBI officer was heard saying “You understand from our perspective, you can’t walk up and tell us how we’re going to do this”.
A spokesman for the militia group, Robert “LaVoy” Finicum, 56, was shot and killed during the arrest of the Bundy brothers and others Tuesday.
An FBI checkpoint was cleared and without explanation a few reporters who happened to be there were able to start driving into the refuge, only to find a new makeshift checkpoint about a mile or so from the occupied buildings.
