Where are Marco Rubio’s tax returns?
The 2012 Republican presidential nominee said on Fox News Wednesday that the contents of Trump’s tax returns are the reason the billionaire developer has not released them.
Romney then said, when asked about his lack of an endorsement for anyone so far, “Well, frankly, I’d like to see a number of things from the candidates, not just their positions on issues in some detail, and some candidates are more thorough in laying out what they’re going to do than others, but I’d also like to see their back taxes”. Romney said it’s suspicious that every time Trump is asked about his taxes, he “dodges” and “delays”. “We’re talking about taxes already filed, back taxes”.
We’ll be working on it. Everything is very much, you know, I gave my financials ahead of schedule, much ahead of schedule. I think in Donald Trump’s case it is likely to be a bombshell.
Under intense pressure, Romney did finally release his tax returns during the campaign, but when it emerged that he had paid around 14% taxes on his 2010 return – less than most Americans – there was political uproar that played into the hands of the Obama campaign. “We raised in one hour, I raised $6 million for the vets, and I would never, ever give that up to go-between first and second in Iowa”, he said.
“This was an issue in my [2012] campaign”. Why isn’t he willing to let us look at the tax returns? “We’re now in late February and we still haven’t seen Donald Trump’s or Marco Rubio’s or Ted Cruz’ taxes”.
Trump, who skipped Fox News’ January GOP debate in Des Moines, Iowa, to hold a nearby rally he described as a benefit for veterans groups, has repeatedly voiced his commitment to such groups in his campaign speeches.
Romney said that of the five remaining candidates, Trump has the “clearest path” to the GOP nomination-but that if the “field narrows”, a non-Trump candidate could end up winning.
Trump’s personal financial disclosure was released by the Federal Election Commission around the time he announced his run for president last year and Trump tweeted in October of last year a picture showing him signing his tax return. Romney added that Trump has failed to release his tax information despite assuring that his team would do so in short order.
