Where Auburn stands in new College Football Playoff rankings
Four teams in the top ten are from the Big Ten. MI and Clemson both managed to stay in the top 5 at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, but the two-loss Wisconsin Badgers leapt over the No. 7 Washington Huskies following their demolition of IL. MI plays IN at home before the much-anticipated November 26 game at Ohio State. 2, 3 and 4 teams all were upset on the same day.
As for the two-loss teams who could get into the playoff, there’s two that come to mind.
Regardless, Michigan is in a good spot and with three wins over top ten teams, the selection committee didn’t see fit to penalize the Wolverines for one slip up.
The teams immediately in front of the Sooners in this week’s CFP Top 25 are Penn State, at No. 8, and No. 7 Wisconsin.
The committee could be faced with choosing an 11-2 Wisconsin or Penn State over an 11-1 Ohio State, which seems unlikely to reach the Big Ten championship game. Right behind them are the Louisville Cardinals, who moved up from No. 5. Louisville’s was to a playoff contender (Clemson) on the road. Washington fell four spots to No. 6 after losing to resurgent USC. If an SEC team like No. 1 Alabama eventually qualifies as one of the final four teams in year three of the CFP, the Sugar Bowl then invites the next highest ranked SEC team in the CFP rankings. Now it’s wins against teams ranked in the current College Football Playoff top 25. If you look at Clemson, they have three wins against CFP top 25 teams.
“Oklahoma is a team that has a tremendous offense”, Hocutt said. College sports continue to prove why they are the best. But would not winning the conference keep the Buckeyes out the way it did last season? But, they still have quite a bit of quality wins under their belt. The Tigers and Huskies both lost at home for their first losses of the season.
The question is out of the top six teams, which one has the best chance to beat Alabama? However, I doubt that happens because their opponents are Rutgers and Michigan State.
Clemson: The Tigers still control their own destiny and will clinch the Atlantic Division with a win at Wake Forest next week but can’t afford another loss and have to beat rival SC in the regular-season finale.
5 p.m. ET: Rose Bowl Game Presented by Northwestern Mutual: No. 7 Wisconsin vs. Colorado, 11. Oklahoma State, 12. Utah, 13. USC, 14.
West Virginia: Don’t count out a one-loss Big 12 champ, but the Mountaineers have a strength-of-schedule problem. West Virginia, 15. Auburn, 16. A 51-3 walloping of Mississippi State, combined with the other top five results, had feel of the Crimson Tide lapping the field. Boise State, who lost to Wyoming earlier, would not qualify for the title game if the Cowboys do not lose again. Western Michigan 22. Washington State 23.
