Where Did Christine Blasey Ford Go to High School?
Meanwhile, Ford’s lawyer has said she would testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Kavanaugh vote (while senators say they’re still waiting for her to confirm), subjecting herself to scrutiny regarding an interaction that left an impact on her life, if not traumatized her. “And that’s why, to be fair to both, we need to know what happened”. That’s particularly true given the stakes here. “Many of us are survivors ourselves”, the letter reads. “He will make a superb Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States”. The president said he was “totally supporting” Kavanaugh and rejected calls for the FBI to investigate the accusation. “I think that’s a pretty good step forward”.
Both the Kavanaugh and Thomas cases underline one of the abiding rules of Supreme Court nominations: The best surprise is no surprise at all.
Grassley set a public hearing for next Monday at which Kavanuagh and Ford were invited to testify. We know how much injury it can do. Murkowski said Ford’s story “must be taken seriously”. Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, of concealing details of Ford’s accusation for several months after it was sent to her office in July. “There was a witness there – and that was this fellow (Mark) Judge”.
The comments by Ford’s lawyer suggested any public hearing could be explosive.
This was at least the third time a Twitter user had “doxed” Ford – posted her personal information online – since she revealed her identity to The Washington Post and accused President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee of sexual assault. Let’s face it: This is so patently unfair to her. The impassioned statement is surely far from her last. “I have never done anything like what the accuser describes-to her or to anyone”, he said. In the letter, Ford said she had received medical treatment after the assault, adding that “it is upsetting to discuss sexual assault and its repercussions, yet I felt guilty and compelled as a citizen about the idea of not saying anything”. Still, they may want to verify elements of her story by trying to interview witnesses and if they can pinpoint where exactly the alleged attack occurred, they may visit the home. “These are the actions of someone who was prepared to go public from the beginning if she had to”. “I did not do this back in high school or at any time”.
According to the Washington Post, Ford, who had also contacted the newspaper in July, chose to go public after it became clear people were learning her identity. “Do the right thing for a change”.
The Journal piece offers a barely veiled threat at Senate Republicans. The argument is that a Kavanaugh defeat would badly demoralize the Republican base in advance of the 2018 midterms – and that depression coupled with Democrats’ huge enthusiasm to vote would flip control.
Republicans responded that reopening the investigation is up to the White House and they are sticking with their plans for a Monday hearing – with or without Ford’s participation.
Trump also says the Federal Bureau of Investigation shouldn’t be involved in investigating the Kavanaugh allegation “because they don’t want to be involved”.
But there is also potential for overreach for the #MeToo movement – and Democrats – if they argue that one incident, allegedly carried out by a drunken 17-year-old Kavanaugh, disqualifies an otherwise stellar legal career and seemingly upright character. It is likely that the hearing will be an absolute circus. “We haven’t been proactive enough making sure it doesn’t happen”. “Unless something else gets dislodged from historical memory” or other women come forward with accusations, “odds are that he will be confirmed”.
Still, Conway and other Republicans are going out of their way to say they want Ford and Kavanaugh to be heard.
