Where does Indiana rank in national obesity rates?
The report, released Monday, shows that 23.3 percent of Bay State residents self-reported as obese past year .
A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and The State of Obesity said the country’s weight is holding steady, but it’s still high. The data was collected as part of the CDC’s Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance System, a telephone survey of state health departments.
The state with the highest rate of obesity was Arkansas at 35.9 percent, followed by West Virginia, Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama.
As of 2014, 34.6 percent of black residents, 31.4 percent of Hispanic residents, and 22.6 percent of white residents are considered obese.
According to CNN, states in the Midwest and the South had the highest obesity rates. Among that demographic, 33 states had an obesity prevalence of 35 percent or greater.
Hawaii and the District of Columbia were on the lightest side with rates in the 21 percent range.
Using data gathered from 2014, the CDC found that no state had a prevalence of adult obesity less than 20 percent.
Heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes are all obesity-related conditions, and are some of the leading causes of preventable death.
