#WheresRey? Fans upset after female character left out of Star Wars Monopoly
The #WheresRey movement is picking up steam again following the release of the new iteration of Star Wars Monopoly, which features characters from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens“.
A Star Wars: The Force Awakens branded Monopoly set has been accused of slipping to the Dark Side by fans after the manufacturers neglected to include any mention of the film’s lead, Rey, in the set. In the past, it was essentially just a standard Monopoly board with Star Wars-themed playing pieces and property names.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens may have smashed almost every box office record going since its release, but there remains a disturbance in the force. The game includes four figures; Darth Vader, Kylo Ren, Finn, and Luke Skywalker.
This isn’t the first time Rey has been missing from a set she should obviously be in.
The spokesperson also said that Rey is featured in several Hasbro games, including Hands Down, Guess Who, and chess, and that “fans will see more Rey product hitting store shelves this month, including 6-inch and 12-inch Rey action figures”.
The news comes following much discussion about Rey’s role in the larger “Star Wars” merchandising line.
Annie Rose has written to Hasbro asking ‘Where’s Rey?’ after receiving the game and discovering that the character does not feature as one of the playing pieces.
The problems of female characters being under-represented in geek merchandise still exists.
It isn’t sold out everywhere, though; the Target website indicates that there are copies of the figure in stock at two stores within a half an hour’s drive from where I live in Syracuse, NY, although you can’t order the toy online.
However, in an interview with The Daily Beast, Disney promised that the unmet demand for Rey merchandise will be addressed with a release of new toy lines this month.
