White House defends proposed cuts to programs for elderly, minorities and poor
Meals on Wheels delivers meals to senior citizens who are homebound.
Past year $130 million federal dollars helped the OH elderly get by.
-The Pentagon. Trump proposes a 10 percent increase in the massive defense budget, adding $52 billion in military spending in one year to expand personnel, equipment and capability.
Eliminating these, or other programs for the poor and elderly will have pronounced impact on numerous voters who helped elect Trump and establish full Republican control of Congress.
“That it’s not too hot or cold. if it sits too long, it can make them sick”. And it turns out, they didn’t.
“Such public investment is often needed to inspire private economic activity, providing the initial resources or simply the confidence that private firms and individuals may need to invest in distressed areas”, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which facilitates the program. It provides funds to states that they can use for a variety of approved purposes.
The proposed cut to the EPA budget is part of the White House’s plan to eliminate climate change programs and trim initiatives to protect air and water quality.
“To pay for these changes, it proposes reductions to non-defense programs”. He said that after-school programs had failed to help children in schools, that housing programs were “not well run”, that government health research had suffered “mission creep” and that grants to local communities “don’t do any good”. He did not suggest the size of the budget to be presented in May, nor did he refer to former President Obama’s last budget, which spent $4.15 trillion while collecting far less than that, resulting in a deficit approaching $600 billion. The plan would slash the Environmental Protection Agency’s budget the furthest, reducing it by more than 30 percent, but it also included massive cuts to the departments of State, Agriculture, and Labor. There are hundreds of Meals on Wheels organizations around the country, so it’s hard to generalize, but overwhelmingly, the groups get the majority of revenue from charitable giving, not government funds. Actually, small isn’t the right word.
It funds not only Meals on Wheels, but also other programs like the low income home energy assistance program, or LIHEAP for short.
These cuts will mean thousands of federal workers will be fired, with some estimating that the cuts could mean up to 20 percent of the 2.79 million federal employees could lose their jobs. “You have an America first budget”, he told reporters, referring to his boss’ campaign.
As you know, Meals on Wheels is not a federal program.
“Not since early in President Reagan’s first term have more tax dollars been saved and more Government inefficiency and waste been targeted”, Mulvaney said. Job training programs would also be cut, pushing more responsibility for this onto the states and employers. But I’m absolutely certain that people who think like that shouldn’t be allowed to serve as president or speaker of the House. We can’t do that anymore.
“At a time when we’re facing a almost $20 trillion debt, there’s no question that we can not continue on the same trajectory and must identify spending priorities to more efficiently and effectively operate the federal government”, Gardner said. Study after study after study has found that Meals on Wheels works. You’re focusing on recipients of the money. We can not defend that anymore.
“While I am now reviewing the details of the president’s budget, Congress ultimately controls the power of the purse and I remain committed to putting Colorado interests first”. The president has repeatedly said Mexico would pay for the wall; Mexican officials are adamant that they won’t. He was saying that CDBGs don’t work. Rob Portman of OH were upset by cuts to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. But by smushing together three quotes delivered at three different points, it sounds like Mulvaney was gleefully killing off food for the elderly.
Graves’ office did not immediately comment on the proposed Community Development Block Grant cuts. But spinning this as “Mulvaney guts Meals on Wheels” is pretty ridiculous.
The budget describes CDBG as duplicative and low-impact.
