White House praises Haley for her ‘courage’
Haley said the US should continue admitting “properly vetted legal immigrants, regardless of their race or religion” – an apparent reference to calls by Trump to temporarily bar Muslims from entering the country. “I’ve known that for a long time”, Trump said. “But they gave me the opportunity to say what I think, and that’s what I did”, she said. And, you know, there’s a lot of concern that that’s the drift right now. She criticized the “angry” voices in the Republican Party that were creating an unwelcoming atmosphere for the very voters that the party needs to attract in order to expand its base.
Republican leaders emphasized the optimism and inclusiveness of their party Thursday when asked about tensions with Donald Trump, who is leading the polls by pitting himself against the establishment. But now that I’m running she wants to take a weak shot on immigration. “I feel very strongly about immigration”.
“That remains the dream of all of us, and in this country we have seen time and again that that dream is achievable”.
Haley later appeared on Fox News’ “On The Record” with Greta Van Susteren and said while she considers Trump “a friend”, she does disagree with him.
Haley’s selection also was an effort to distance the party from some of Trump’s positions, including his call for a halt on Muslim immigration to the U.S. Haley, 43, an Indian-American, spoke out against Trump’s stance toward Muslim immigration and leads an early-voting state considered important to the nominating process. “The President has read news accounts of it, so he certainly is aware of her response”, he said. “We’ve had it – we’ve had it – with illegal immigration, believe me, and a lot of other things”.
Conservative commentator and author Ann Coulter went even farther, writing: “Trump should deport Nikki Haley”.
Today, Carly Fiorina was asked for her thoughts on Haley by radio host Mike Gallagher, and neither of them apparently appreciated the governor’s casting of blame on both sides of the aisle.
“Too bad @NikkiHaley missed her oppty to stand w/ working ppl who want borders enforced, American workers put first, govt shrunk”, Ingraham wrote.
“I absolutely would sit down and talk with anyone that wanted to talk”, Haley said. Nikki Haley speaks at the National Press Club in Washington.
“He was one of them, yes”.
South Carolina’s young, charismatic governor Nikki Haley, considered by some a potential vice presidential pick, essentially cleared the way for Trump’s rivals by attacking the rhetoric of the celebrity billionaire. I understood that when I hit Republicans and Democrats, I was going to upset people.
