White House releases photos of Pompeo meeting with Kim Jong Un

It presumably hopes that will pave the way, in time, for a unified Korea that’s led by the North and is beholden to neither the United States nor China. It may also help to set the parameters of another unprecedented meeting, between Mr Kim and President Trump, planned for May or June.

The go-to areas for cooperation between North and South Korea involve family reunions, humanitarian work on communicable diseases, and the expansion of inter-Korean cultural and sporting exchanges, based on the model of recent inter-Korean pop concerts and sports exhibitions. I am confident, however, that this subject will be on the U.S. -NK summit agenda.

On Wednesday, Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that the US would be having a meeting with the North Korean leader very soon. “From North Korea’s perspective, the USA meeting is the real prize”.

North Korea conducted a slew of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) tests a year ago despite strong condemnation and sanctions from the global community.

But scepticism is rampant about whether Kim is ready to abandon the hard-earned nuclear arsenal his country has defended and developed for decades as what it says is a necessary deterrent against US invasion.

As a conscript in the South’s special forces, Moon was part of the joint mission with the United States to remove the tree in a show of force three days after the attack, though he was not on the scene.
