White House rips GOP for blocking gun control measures
Gun laws had nothing to do with them.
Speaking softly, a subdued Obama said too often Americans feel there’s nothing they can do to prevent this kind of violence.
These and other issues can be addressed through the political process, if there is the will….
“It is entirely possible that these two attackers were radicalized to commit this act of terror and if so, it would underscore a threat we’ve been focused on for years-the danger of people succumbing to violent extremist ideologies”, Obama said, according to a transcript released Friday evening that was embargoed until 6 a.m. Saturday. In the hours after the shooting, Trump initially cast such shootings “a mental health issue, to a large extent”. He offered another explanation Thursday. The President said he was to make it harder to get guns, but not impossible.
Certainly, the possibility of radicalization to a terrorist group is not an insignificant concern, especially in light of the most recent deadly terrorist attacks in Paris and Mali.
Obama’s comments were a far cry from the frustrated rants he has unleashed in the wake of other mass murders.
The shooting came less than a week after a shooting at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs left three people dead.
President Obama edged nearer Saturday to announcing the shooting in San Bernardino, Calif., that caused the death of 14 people a terrorist attack, but held on to his prescription that the solution to preventing such tragedies was gun limits.
“We talked about this after Columbine and Blacksburg, after Tucson, after Newtown, after Aurora, after Charleston”, he said in October.
Democrats, including President Barack Obama, emphasize the need to address America’s problems with guns. The measure also would require licenses for ammunition sellers and background checks for ammunition buyers.
There’s a very good reason why the gun control debate reignites after every mass shooting, just as it has after the massacre in San Bernardino.
While the Democrats claim Cornyn’s proposal was a sham, enabling gun purchases to continue as usual, the Republicans feared the Manchin-Toomey Gun Control Bill would deny people the right to own firearms due to the Republican party’s suspicion that the current terror-watch list includes people that do not belong on there, thus denying them their right to own a gun.
“There are some steps we could take not to eliminate every one of these mass shootings, but to improve the odds that they don’t happen as frequently: common-sense gun safety laws, stronger background checks”, the president said.
Senate Republicans voted against barring suspected terrorists, felons and the mentally ill from getting guns on Thursday afternoon, parroting National Rifle Association arguments that doing so would strip some innocent people of their constitutional rights to gun access just a day after yet another massacre on USA soil.
“Sensible gun laws work; we’ve proven it in California, and we’re not going to give up”, U.S. Sen. Ryan was cautious not to label the shooting, before the facts were known. With White House lawyers still poring over the legal questions, officials said any announcement would be at least a month away.
Along with Trump, Sen. Cruz told a crowd of Jewish activists that all of us are deeply concerned that this is yet another manifestation of terrorism, radical Islamic terrorism here at home..
