White nationalists, protesters clash in California; 10 hurt
About 30 skinheads and other members of the Traditionalist Worker Party, a right-wing group, arrived at noon on Sunday for a planned rally on the grounds of the Capitol, the state seat of government.
The CHP had issued a permit to the white supremacists for a rally at a specific time on state property, potentially giving the agency two advantages, Levin said: They could have physically separated the two sides, and they could have searched participants for weapons.
Several members of the Black Bloc assaulted KCRA’s Mike Luery and his photographer, making it clear they did not want documentation of their destruction of the Capitol.
Heimbach said that in the clash, one of their marchers had been stabbed in an artery and six of the counter-protesters had also been stabbed.
“Anybody that wants to come to the city and let their voice be heard in a lawful manner, we’re here to assist them”, City of Cleveland Assistant Police Chief Edward Tomba said last month.
The clash at California rally resulted in fatal stabbings and injuries outside the capitol building in Sacramento. Witnesses say the scuffle between the two groups started nearly immediately and went on for 20 minutes, sending at least 9 people to the hospital.
More than 100 Sacramento police officers were deployed at the event after authorities learned that a group called Anti-Fascist Action Sacramento was planning a counter-protest, police said.
Authorities were investigating what happened, but no arrests have been made.
The victims were all present while a protest took place, said Sacramento Police spokesman Matt McPhail but he said it was still unclear whether and how they were involved.
Multiple people were reportedly stabbed in what the Sacramento Fire Department called a “mass casualty event” after counter-protesters crashed a rally in Sacramento organized by a far-right political group known as the Traditionalist Worker Party.
“They (the counter-protesters) were there for one reason and that was to use violence to break the other group up”, Roderick said.
But Vellucci said the dozens of officers were slow to respond when counter-protesters rushed the white supremacists as they entered the Capitol grounds.
According to The Sacramento Bee newspaper, the stabbing spree broke out between some 25 neo-Nazis who had permission to protest on the capitol’s west steps and more than 150 anarchists and “anti-fascist” counterprotesters.
