According to a release from the team, the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority, the owner and operator of the ballpark, approved the name change at a meeting of its board on Wednesday afternoon. Millions and millions of dollars, judging by stadium naming rights agreements in other cities, but terms of the Chicago deal weren’t disclosed.
U.S. Cellular Field bought the naming rights to Comiskey Park in 2002, which was a 20-year deal for $68 million.
“We’re going to put a lot of effort into getting some buzz and having some fun in the stadium”, Guaranteed Rate founder Victor Ciardelli told the Tribune.
The question now becomes: What do fans call it for short?
Following the conclusion of the 2016 season, the Chicago White Sox will no longer play at U.S. Cellular Field. The Chicago White Sox offense has also picked up recently, and they’ve won six of their last eight games when scoring more than three runs.
Of course, considering in March Guaranteed Rate was ordered to pay $25 million in damages for corporate espionage, it seems like they’d be a much better fit for a different Major League Baseball team.
Boyer said they had reached out to a small group of local businesses about a potential naming rights deal and found a willing partner in the mortgage company. The ballpark on 35th and Shields will be renamed Guaranteed Rate Field starting November 1.
“He relies a lot on command, and he hasn’t shown that”, Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said. In it, they expressed excitement with the new partnership and thanking U.S. Cellular for the old one. “We feel the fans should decide and the fans should make the decision”.
