Who did Ricky Gervais insult at this year’s Golden Globes?
DIFF 2015 opener “Room” won at the Golden Globes.
The night is split in two categories: Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical and Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama, which allows less competition.
The Golden Globes, handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, are the first major film honors of the Hollywood awards season that culminates with the Oscars on February 28th.
Leonardo DiCaprio took home the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama for “The Revenant”.
Matt Damon won the Best actor in a comedy for “The Martian” but his win was more of a buzz boost for an Oscar nomination.
BEST DIRECTOR Only six of the last 15 men to win this category have gone on to win Oscars, so while Alejandro G. Iñárritu certainly has a chance to make history by becoming the first person in 66 years to win back-to-back directing Oscars, it’s no guarantee after winning Sunday night. Ridley Scott, whose film The Martian won best picture-musical or comedy, read three pages of notes when he accepted the award.
The most egregious of these came in the Best Actress in a Comedy, when Jennifer Lawrence won for the resoundingly mediocre “Joy”.
Hosting the glittering gala considered Hollywood’s biggest party of the year was British comedian Ricky Gervais, who dished out his trademark suggestive humour, targeting Caitlyn Jenner, Mel Gibson and Sean Penn, among many others.
Feinberg pointed out that while there was unanimous agreement on DiCaprio’s Oscar chances, the Globes could not be considered a bellwether for the Academy Awards overall, leaving the race wide open.
– Taraji P. Henson, accepting her award for best actress in a television drama for her role as Cookie Lyon on hip-hop series “Empire”. In his speech he said, “I want to thank my imaginary friend Rocky Balboa for being the best friend I ever had”. Sometimes the Golden Globes really do recognize good work, and America Ferrera and Eva Longoria can have fun calling out Hollywood’s institutional racism, and Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schumer can goof around for a few minutes onstage and it feels like the world is a nicer place. Jamie Foxx, who presented the award for best original score, announced that the victor was Straight Outta Compton, which wasn’t even nominated.
Brie Larson (Room) won the best actress, drama (Room), over Cate Blanchett (Carol), Rooney Mara (Carol), Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) and Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl).
Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement honoree Denzel Washington also fumbled his way through his speech, which generally serves as a poignant respite in an otherwise irreverent evening.
