Who Is Chris Harper Mercer? Oregon’s Alleged Umqua Community College Shooter

A witness reports he asked students what their religions were before he began shooting.

Derrick McClendon, another former L.A.-area neighbor of Harper-Mercer’s, described him as a “bashful” and “timid” man who kept to himself. In the statement the family said the “amazing” teen, who was studying chemistry at the college, loved animals and soccer.

The sentiments, most certainly, are heartfelt, and yet they are empty somehow, because in all these months and years since similar shootings in Columbine, Virginia Tech, Newtown, Fort Hood and Charleston, such words ring hollow, because they have become as commonplace as our politicians’ predictable inability to do anything substantive, or anything at all, to make Americans safe from gun violence. At the time of Chris’ death, three officers were on the scene: two Roseburg police department officers and one Oregon state trooper.

Within two minutes of their arrival, the Roseburg detectives got into a shootout with Harper-Mercer just outside Snyder Hall.

In an interview with CNN, Ian Mercer also wondered “how on earth” his son could have amassed so many weapons, Reuters reported. They remained quiet and did not open the door. Beloved sons and daughters.

Harper-Mercer wore a flak jacket and brought at least six guns and five ammunition magazines when he went to the campus that morning.

He apparently demanded to know his victims’ religious beliefs before opening fire. His 26-year-old son had been living in Oregon.

After his parents divorced when he was about 16, he lived with his mother, Laurel Harper, a nurse who fiercely protected him from, among other things, the neighborhood sounds of loud children and barking dogs.
