Who Is Jeff Sessions, Donald Trump’s Pick for Attorney General?
President-elect Donald Trump has picked Alabama Sen.
A former US attorney for Alabama, the selection has been celebrated on the right and strongly criticized on the left because of Senator Sessions’ record on issues such as immigration and race. And, of course, the people of Alabama, whom Sessions has served for so long, wouldn’t have been easy to fool.
“There’s reverberations that could last a long time if an AG Sessions chose to go after the big boys funding the marijuana industry”, Sabet said, noting that PayPal founder and Trump donor Peter Thiel has invested in the industry.
Some of that depends on how much latitude Trump gives him, Hudak said. The right to use marijuana, at least for medical purposes, should remain protected, Allen said.
Sessions’ thoughts on the issue have been clear.
“Good people don’t smoke marijuana”, Sessions said during a Senate hearing in April.
“What is probably most likely under Sessions is that the federal government will conduct more raids and interfere more with what states are doing with marijuana legalization of all classes and types”, Bill Piper, the senior director national affairs at the drug reform advocacy group Drug Policy Alliance told me in a phone call. Under the Obama Administration, states really were allowed to enforce their own marijuana laws despite still being listed as a schedule 1 controlled substance as it pertains to the federal law.
And yet these days the AP is busy cranking out stories about Sessions’ “racial issues” and claiming that he’s facing “a tough senate confirmation”, even though he has already garnered bi-partisan support and Republicans clearly have the votes to confirm him. “There is no gray area about that. An attorney general with a track record of hostility towards women, communities of color and the LGBT community is simply unfit to serve”, Sellers concluded.
The concerns could dampen enthusiasm in states such as Pennsylvania that are just now launching their legalized marijuana programs, he said.
Who will replace Sen.
Mr Trump said Mr Flynn would be “by my side as we work to defeat radical Islamic terrorism, navigate geopolitical challenges and keep Americans safe at home and abroad”. “It is false that marijuana use doesn’t lead people to more drug use”.
The industry does have some potential protections. However, after Trump’s January 20 inauguration, all bets are off.
He also says that because of the president-elect’s business orientation, he would be “shocked to see” the Trump administration interfere with the legal marijuana industry. “Particularly, I am concerned with his support for policies that would undermine core Department of Justice functions and his views that are incompatible with constitutional guarantees”, Harris said in a statement.
For example, during a 2010 confirmation hearing for James Cole, Sessions questioned the former USA deputy attorney general about the “dangerous” philosophy of not charging companies criminally because of concerns that doing so could lead to bankruptcy and hurt employees and shareholders.
Black Lives Matter activist and Campaign Zero co-founder DeRay Mckesson said Sessions’ “documented racism and previous ineligibility for public office make him unfit to be the standard-bearer for the nation’s justice system”.
Senator Sessions adamantly denies being a racist despite things he’s said in the past.
The Pennsylvania Health Department, which is overseeing the rollout of the medical marijuana program, is talking it all in stride.
“Lady Gaga said she’s addicted to it, and it is not harmless”. “Jeff has been such a great friend to me and many others, becoming one of the most respected leaders in the Senate and should easily be confirmed”.
Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said, “Unfortunately, these very important picks in his administration send a troubling message indicating that the bigotry we saw expressed in the campaign will continue”.
On his Senate website, Sessions said he is focused on finding ways to make healthcare more affordable and improve consumer access to doctors and hospitals.
