Kaine is a fluent Spanish speaker with a reputation for working with Republicans.

Clinton said the most important qualification in choosing a running mate was selecting someone who could step in and become president if necessary.
But Clinton warned the crowd: “Make no mistake, behind that smile, Tim also has a backbone of steel”.
Both Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, are personally fond of Kaine and believed he would be a loyal and dependable governing partner.
Clinton and Kaine are making their debut appearance as running mates at the Miami event.
Clinton ended a months-long search for a running mate with a Friday evening phone call to the Virginia senator. Kaine said of the Republican nominee, calling Clinton “the direct opposite of Donald Trump”.
Angie Morelli, a Sanders delegate from Nevada said Kaine’s selection “was a terrible pick”. He’s the former head of the Democratic National Committee – a position now held by U.S. Rep.
Emails posted by Wikileaks on its document disclosure website show DNC officials scoffing at the Sanders campaign – and, in one instance, questioning his commitment to his Jewish religion. The senator said that while Trump has trashed talked multiple groups in the country, including people with disabilities and the Hispanic community, Clinton is the type of leader who builds people up. Kaine asked in Annandale, Va., as Ms. Clinton nodded.
The streets are freshly swept, the hotel rooms are pristine, the party invitations have gone out and extra police patrols are assigned.
David Botkins, a Dominion spokesman, said Kaine “has supported the development of affordable, cleaner energy sources in Virginia and throughout the United States”. The state has trended Democratic in recent elections, and Obama captured it in 2008. Dipping in and out in Spanish several times, he drew on his experiences as mayor, governor and the time he spent helping Jesuit missionaries in Honduras to emphasize the importance of service. “Kaine doesn’t have many vulnerabilities or weaknesses”.
The Virginia senator is regarded as a careful, earnest politician who has navigated the rough-and-tumble of his state’s hard-fought electoral landscape with few ethical missteps. But minor controversies have flared over his acceptance of paid travel and gifts.
Both share similar concerns on education, health care and a tax overhaul.
Clinton opposes offshore drilling.
Sen. Kaine got some practice challenging Mr. Trump’s message when he campaigned with Clinton last week in northern Virginia, where he spoke briefly in Spanish and offered a strident assault on Mr. Trump’s White House credentials.
Clinton and Kaine appeared at Florida International University in Miami. Clinton’s choice could play well in the crucial battleground state of Florida as well.
His selection completes the lineup for the general election.
