While Ohio State still owns most of the first place votes, their hold on the top spot is slipping as Michigan State and Ole Miss received first-place votes this week.
The Huskies jumped out to an early lead against Ohio State, but the offense stalled for Northern Illinois and the Buckeyes survived a potential upset with a 20-13 win on Saturday afternoon at Ohio Stadium.
The Associated Press and USA Today released it’s top 25 coaches rankings recently, and to no one’s surprise, the Ohio State Buckeyes remained on top of each poll.
But even hours after the final whistle, I’m still having a hard time grasping just why the game was kept so close to begin with.

Junior running back Joel Bouagnon carried much of the rushing load for the Huskies’ offense, carrying the ball 21 times for a total of 78 yards. NIU could have gone into the half with a 13-10 lead, gained momentum, and gotten the ball back…instead they punted.
Jones is a threatening player in the open field: He ran for 296 yards on 72 carries (4.1 yards per rush, 29.6 yards per game), scoring a lone touchdown on the ground last season. Ohio State had five turnovers in all but still managed to extend the nation’s longest winning streak to 16 games.
Keys to Victory: Ohio State brought back four offensive line from their championship season, in which they ran the ball for an average of 298 yards per game.
On the day, the Ohio State defense surrendered only 190 yards to a Huskies offense.
Jack Willoughby kicked a 31-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 7-3.
Jones threw two interceptions and went to the bench in the second quarter. They had six plays of 26 yards or more from the line of scrimmage, including Elliott’s 80-yard touchdown run and Miller catching a 54-yard TD pass and running 53-yards for another. Elliott finished the game with 108 yards on 23 carries.
