Who Won the Cotto Canelo Alvarez Boking Fight Last Night: Boxing Results
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez landed 155 punches for 32% compared to the 129 blows connected by Miguel Cotto for 21%, according to CompuBox. Alvarez is already a consistent pay-per-view draw, with his only loss coming in a fight with Mayweather that he proved too inexperienced to win. Could we see something of an agreed-upon “victory lap” title defense for Canelo on the May 7 date before a fight with Golovkin? The red-head known simply as “Canelo” among fans has consistently drawn big, enthusiastic crowds. Canelo should fight GGG to test out his ability.
Here at Boxing Base we actually had it 115-113, Cotto, but would have settled for a Draw/one point swing for Canelo given the closeness of some rounds. Canelo beat Miguel Cotto 117-111, 119-109 and 118-110 to win the vacant title by unanimous decision, reports FoxSports. He’s 35 and fought enough wars for two lifetimes. And maybe he should.
He added that their opponent moves like a robot which allows fighter to corner him at certain angles.
Of course, Alvarez can walk away with the title if he wins. The fight that may be Oscars most memorable, is Oscar’s first loss against Felix “Tito” Trinidad, another chapter in the Mexico-Puerto Rico boxing rivalry.
“We thought it was much closer than the scorecards showed”, said Hall of Famer Freddie Roach, who is Cotto’s trainer. “It was a competitive fight”. Last night, however, many contended that Miguel Cotto won the earlier rounds, only to fade.
Cotto’s career has been outstanding. De La Hoya plans to sit with Alvarez and explore the possible fights before ultimately deciding on how to handle the looming and mandatory showdown with Triple G.
As soon as the scores were read, this was all anyone wanted to know.
Will it be Mayweather vs. Canelo or Canelo vs. Golovkin next? Promoters are hopeful a big Hispanic audience will produce some 1.5 million buys but that seems wildly optimistic in the wake of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.
“The bottom line is we have “the guy.’ We have “the guy” for many years, and it’s going to be a lot of fun putting together some big fights”. His resume is loaded with high level opponents, and there is no reason to believe he will back down from this one.
“I am not afraid of any fighter, but right now I am focused on Cotto”. He can take an easier fight, on HBO, at middleweight, and formally work his way up. I don’t want him doing that. He is now 8-2 against Mexican fighters.
Does that include Gennady Golovkin?
After the win over Cotto, Alvarez stated in the ring during his post-fight interview that he would put the gloves on at that very moment to do battle with his friend and former sparring partner.
