Whoa! Huge runaway ball rolls through Toledo streets
The ball has been on the move throughout the city for the last seven days, being placed in different locations, bringing attention to different places around the city.
During high winds, a travelling art exhibition weighing over 100kgs came loose and wrecked havoc in a US street. The ball was chased down by a few “minders” hired by the artist, as well as some museum staff and even a restaurant waiter. A street sign may have gotten bent out of shape in the mishap.
Intrepid Ohioans can catch the ball (as it were) at Boyd’s Retro Candy Store on Phillips Avenue today, according to the museum’s website, then at Side Cut Metropark tomorrow and back at the museum on Sunday.
Toledo Museum of Art spokeswoman Kelly Garrow said the ball was damaged in the incident and had to be patched in several places.
How it usually appears… the ball was exhibited in Sydney for the Art and About Festival in 2003. The show is meant to pose questions like “Is play just for kids?”
MOTORISTS and pedestrians in Toledo, Ohio, got the shock of their lives when a big red ball broke free from its mooring and bounced and rolled down city streets.
The ball’s unexpected voyage lends new context to Perschke’s statement about the project.
“The magnetic, playful and charismatic nature of “RedBall” allows the work to access the imagination embedded in all of us”, the sculpture’s artist, Kurt Perschke said. But, you know, that’s Toledo for you I guess.
