Why does Michael Phelps have purple spots on his back?
Now, cut to last night (Monday), when the two were in the ready room before the semi-finals of the 200 butterfly.
Phelps now has 23 total medals (19 of them gold).
Following the semifinals – Phelps took second, while le Clos clocked in behind him in third place – Phelps swore to NBC that he wasn’t paying any attention to le Clos.
But just how many medals has Phelps won?
Phelps certainly did not approve of Le Clos’ routine.
“If that’s his, that’s his”, Phelps told USA Today.
“He does his thing, I do mine”.
Phelps ranks No. 1 in most medals ever won in the Olympic Games-and also in most gold medals won. Already he has a gold medal to his name, having been a part of the American team that won the 4x100m freestyle relay.
Phelps finished second in the semifinal behind Tamas Kenderesi who, along with fellow Hungarian Laszlo Cseh, could yet upset the Phelps versus Le Clos narrative. That means he has remarkably won 10 more golds than the next most successful Olympian of all time.
Michael Phelps advanced to the 200m butterfly Olympic final on Monday night from Rio, but the real drama of the evening came in the dressing room during a rare face-off between Phelps and South African swimmer Chad Le Clos.
