Why Fantastic Four Failed, According To Stan Lee
Stan “The Man” Lee was interviewed by Larry King on something called Ora.tv when he was asked why Fantastic Four flopped.
Lee is listed as an executive producer of the Fantastic Four film like virtually all Marvel-related television and film projects, but that could be a contractual term and not denote in actual involvement by Lee in the movie itself.
However, Lee isn’t necessarily involved in many movies beyond his usual cameo appearance.
Now, whenever you’re taking a quote from Stan Lee, it’s best to take it with a pinch of salt.
Lee, who created the original Fantastic Four with Jack Kirby, added that the filmmakers didn’t discuss the story with him. Meanwhile, a “Fantastic Four” film sequel is slated to hit theaters on June 9, 2017.
The writer also spoke about his financial stake in the films, which is to say “none”.
“A year ago I had a fantastic vision of this”, the 31-year-old Trank tweeted the day before the film opened, before deleting the offending post.
The first “Fantastic Four” movie (not counting the unreleased 1994 Roger Corman-directed monstrosity) earned $154.7 million at the box office, despite a similarly lukewarm response from reviewers. “And it would have received great reviews”. “I don’t run to see anything…I just get there eventually”, he explained. Luckily, Lee still has plenty of upcoming cameo opportunities in Marvel Comics adaptations with “Captain America: Civil War”, “X-Men: Apocalypse“, “Gambit” and “Doctor Strange” all set to come out in 2016.
