Why ‘Gilmore GIrls’ may continue after new Netflix series
And this parent-child banter: “Did you do something slutty?”
Dean didn’t just win Rory’s heart, he managed to win over Lorelai as well, quickly becoming the only real Gilmore Guy on the show.
Thankfully, it’s not imagined. The comedy drama will return with a mini-series titled Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life on Netflix.
With creator Amy Sherman-Palladino back at the helm – she was not part of Season 7 – chances are they will.
There is just something about the relationship between 32-year-old Lorelai Gilmore (the earthy and wonderful Lauren Graham of Townies and Conrad Bloom, among other shows) and her 16-year-old daughter, Rory (luminous newcomer Alexis Bledel) that sparkles with onscreen chemistry and charm.
Luke (Scott Patterson), Lorelai’s on-again, off-again love is here, as are the supporting characters who gave the show, well, character.
Zack Van Gerbig and Lane Kim are especially back with their band and the new episodes will feature the effects of marriage on their lives. “It was just like it was meant to continue”.
Gilmore Girls features some dynamic characters. “When Netflix popped up and chose to storm the world and just take over overnight, we thought, “Well, what a great opportunity to delve into a different form, to tell stories in a different way using beloved characters that we loved”, she says.
There’s a sad shadow, however, cast by the passing of family head Richard Gilmore.
“We all really felt his loss, and he would have loved it (working on the sequel) so much”, Graham said in an interview.
I understand wanting to be prepared for a meeting of this kind, but also, can you just shut the f*** up and be happy your grandfather went out of his way to do this for you?
The beloved series that ran 2000-’07 on the WB and later CW networks has been revived for four hotly anticipated 90-minute chapters, each launching globally on Netflix today.
Speaking of mothering methords, Alexis Bledel admitted she’s already been imagining what kind of mother Rory would be. Additionally, viewers will finally find out more about Rory’s situation with her three love interests. Every episode will emphasize on a different season. Also, for years, Sherman-Palladino has teased that she’s always known what the last four words of the show would be; the mystery surrounding the final line has reached nearly mythical status. You can even take a pledge saying that you won’t spoil the last four words. It’s a fun trip. Eight years ago, I woke up even earlier than needed for my shift at my retail job with one thing in mind: “Gilmore Girls”.
But rather than work around his death, showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino has instead made it a focal point for the revival, choosing not to shy away from grief or make any tributes saccharine. Gilmore Girls is a genuine gem in the making, a family-friendly hour unburdened by trite cliche or precocious pablum. “I’ll say that”, Czuchry told Entertainment Weekly. She’s drawn back to Stars Hollow and at the same time anxious to put down her own roots somewhere.
So the miniseries’ ending leaves an opening?
Technology has changed the way Americans live so massively in the last decade that you can no longer pretend it doesn’t exist, but you can tell how much Sherman-Palladino wishes she could.
