Why Les Miles is the coach on the hot seat
Les Miles is reportedly about to be back on the free agent market and no one should be happier about that than USC Athletic Director Pat Haden. And it’s Les Miles.
Miles is 110-32 over 11 seasons with the Tigers, with two SEC Championships and a national title. This will have an impact in trying to recruit a replacement for Miles, who will be hard to replace as it is.
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, even, offered kinds words for the coach in a message on Twitter: Les Miles “is a great coach and a better man. He is a fantastic ambassador for our state”.
The SEC is perceived as the toughest conference in the country, which explains why a coach carrying Miles’ clout could conceivably be on the hot seat.
“Support the Hat”, one sign said. A source at the meeting told ESPN.com’s David Ching that Miles spoke for about 15 minutes, and, like usual, he received a standing ovation when he entered and exited the meeting.
During the “Tiger Walk”, from the team buses to the stadium, Miles was greeted like a hero as he waved to the crowd, at times pausing and turning around as if to soak it all in.
“I did not have that opportunity (to tell the players he was staying)”, Miles said.
A month ago, the biggest storyline surrounding the game was the return of former LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis to Tiger Stadium. The quarterback put forth a big game against the Mississippi State Bulldogs despite the loss. “Fire Joe Alleva.” The banner was taken down after the first quarter.
UPDATE: It seems we have an anonymous source interpretation battle.
It’s an emotional issue as evidenced later Wednesday night during his radio show at a local restaurant.
“Some live questioners were brought to tears at the event at TJ Ribs on Acadian Thruway”, The Advocate reported.
Les Miles appears to be on the way out at LSU. They did the same following the victory.
Miles’ team started 7-0 this season behind the success of star running back Leonard Fournette.
It was another “W” for a résumé full of them.
This year, LSU has lost three games in a row and once again is not ranked after being ranked No. 2 prior to the losing streak. He has won 77.5 percent of his games at LSU, the best winning percentage for any coach in the modern era of LSU football. The Tigers were in position to win the SEC West going into their matchup against Alabama, but they have since been outscored by opponents 99-47.
Alexander said he found out that Miles could return next season via a text message from his parents informing him of Alleva’s postgame announcement. USC, however, is still in need of a head coach that is going to lead it to double-digit win seasons for many years to come.
The source, who did not want his name used, said that the MU search process could be wrapped up in the next few days, but that Miles could be a “wild card in all this”.
