Why Politicians Are Wearing White to President Trump’s Big Speech
Donald Trump’s first joint session address to the Congress on Tuesday is generating a lot of debate as to what to expect from a president whose presidency has been the most unorthodox and unconventional.
Their presence will be a powerful reminder of the very real dangers of illegal immigration and will certainly give the president justification for his plans to combat it. The speech is an opportunity for Mr Trump to frame the big bold choices of his administration. Trump also challenged opponents of his immigration policy.
President Trump once again called on Congress to upgrade America’s roads, airports and rail lines by $1 trillion without putting many details on it.
“If Trump can put flesh on the bones of his pro-growth economic plans, then United States bond yields could rise and drag the dollar with them, if he fails to do this then we could see further dollar weakness”.
Trump is likely to repeat some of the comments he made last week in a speech before conservatives.
Trump’s address also caught the attention of foreign leaders.
Benjamin Friedman, research fellow in defence and homeland security studies at the CATO Institute said: “The reason it won’t get through Congress as it stands is that while the Democrats agree in principle that we should increase defence spending, they don’t agree on how”.

Orange County’s top Republicans gave President Donald Trump’s speech to Congress glowing reviews, with House members saying they’ll push the administration agenda forward and others applauding the commander in chief’s delivery. At this point, President Trump has only been in office for 40 days.
“Tonight, as we mark the conclusion of our celebration of Black History Month, we are reminded of our nation’s path toward civil rights and the work that still remains”, Trump said at the outset of his speech.
The PBS NewsHour will be streaming the speech live on Twitter.
According to CNN, “several relatives of people killed by undocumented migrants will be in First Lady Melania Trump’s box on the House balcony for the address”, including Jamiel Shaw Sr., whose teenage son was shot by an undocumented immigrant, and the widows of two California police officers who were killed on duty in 2014. During the campaign, Trump proposed tariffs on goods from Mexico and China.
The speech was expected to provide Trump with an overall boost in his approval ratings, which have languished in the first weeks of his presidency. The mantra? “Buy American and hire American”, a message that resonates with most voters.
Bruce Alpert reported on this story for VOA Learning English. “I think we have something that’s going to be really excellent”.
