Wichita mom responds on Facebook to saleswoman who body shamed her daughter
Megan Harris and her 13-year-old daughter Lexi were shopping in a Wichita, Kansas, Dillard’s for formal dresses last week when Lexi humored her mom and tried on a dress that wasn’t quite her style. I told you that she was just fine without SPANX.
“My daughter is tall, she swims, runs, dances and does yoga”, Harris wrote.
Still, this bonding ritual between Megan Naramore Harris and her daughter went well.
Harris said Dillard’s staff had contacted her, said they were very kind and plan to use this as a talking point for their employees.
She continued, “Girls of all ages, shapes and sizes are flawless because that is how God made them”. Harris also underscored that the Spanx comment wasn’t an acceptable, standard-issue salesperson move to make a commission: “The entire conversation I had with the sales lady, I will NOT repeat, but I can ASSURE you it was not a basic up-sale”. Any mother will tell you this is already an excruciating experience, especially since teen girls have a notoriously poor sense of body image.
But instead of getting to feel excitement over watching her little girl grow up and get ready for a special occasion, Megan was left hurt and outraged when a salesperson offered some insulting unsolicited advice. I hope this is shared and gets back to you so that you should not say something like that to a girl ever again.
Others said: “Lexi is indeed lovely… just the way she is”. Harris published a post about the visit on Facebook January 20, leaving many shoppers swearing they’d never set foot in the store again. You never know what negative or positive thoughts they are thinking about themselves.
We’d absolutely agree, and it’s lovely to see a mum sticking up for her daughter so passionately.
She later wrote the Facebook letter – with her daughter’s permission.
That post has been shared over 40-thousand times and has over 250,000 likes.
Another wrote: “She is attractive and that lady is part of the problem with society!”
Eyewitness News reached out to Dillard’s about the incident.
“At Dillard’s, our mission is to help people feel good about themselves by enhancing the natural beauty found in all of us”, it read.
