Widespread use of antibiotics can create AMR – Subramaniam
Students worked with the CDC Get Smart program, which is an annual, one week observance to raise awareness of the threat of antibiotic resistance and the importance of appropriate antibiotic prescribing and use, according to the CDC website. Important steps have already been taken to cut antibiotic use: the meat poultry industry nearly halved its use of critically important antibiotics from 2012 to 2015 by improving training, stewardship, stockmanship and disease control.
“More than ever, we need an in-depth review of what works: Which practices have been shown to reduce farm antibiotic use?” In particular, the European Union average percentage of carbapenem resistance in Klebsiella pneumoniae increased from 6.2 per cent in 2012 to 8.1 per cent in 2015, and combined resistance to carbapenems and polymyxins (e.g. colistin) was sometimes reported.
“Antibiotics play an important role in the treatment of serious bacterial infections, but like all medicines, antibiotics have the potential to cause side effects”, says Dr Yoo. Combined resistance to carbapenems and polymyxins, such as the antibiotic colistin, was reported in some countries.
State health officials are collaborating with several partners, including the Indiana Hospital Association, Indiana University Hospitals and Butler University, on a project to educate healthcare providers and their patients about the dangers of overprescribing and overusing antibiotics.
State health officials are joining public health leaders around the world during the week of November 14, in calling attention to the issue of antibiotic resistance – one of the most important public health threats of the 21st century. Each year in the United States, at least 2 million people fall ill and 23,000 people die from infections caused by antibioticresistant bacteria.
There are concerns about the rise of strains of E coli that are resistant to antibiotics.
The activities of the World Antibiotic Awareness Week were organized by the Ministry of Health (MoH) in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture and the World Health Organization (WHO). While this happens naturally, the over-use and misuse of antibiotics has accelerated the process, leading to record high levels of antibiotic resistance.
“We need to preserve the value of antibiotics for future generations”.
Our guidance on the prescribing of antibiotics for respiratory tract infections, an area where antibiotics are often over prescribed, is an example of this advice already in action. While the CHP is committed to enhancing public awareness of AMR, joint efforts with the healthcare sector and the community at large are crucial in containing the problem. “Whenever we have something like this and don’t take good care, it spreads”, she said.
How to prevent antibiotic resistance The simplest way to everyday Australians can rebuild and later stave off this resistance is to really think about why we’re taking an antibiotic – and, most importantly, if it’s necessary.
And our ‘antimicrobial stewardship’ guidance lays out how to protect the antibiotics we now have. Rather than risk having a patient go to a different doctor, some doctors will go ahead a prescribe an antibiotic, even when they know that’s not what the patient needs.
