Wife in California attack pledged allegiance to ISIS
A massive effort is now underway to learn more about both Farook, who was born in the US and was an employee at the center, and Malik, who came to the U.S.in July of 2014 as Farook’s fiancee, with a Pakistani passport.
According to CNN, investigators believe that as the attack was happening, Malik went on Facebook to make her pledge to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
But there was no sign that anyone affiliated with the Islamic State communicated back with her.
Specifics details about Tashfeen Malik’s postings weren’t disclosed Friday by the law enforcement official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because this person was not allowed to discuss an ongoing investigation.
The FBI has been investigating the shooting at a social service center as a potential act of terrorism but had reached no firm conclusions as of Thursday, with authorities cautioning repeatedly that the violence could have stemmed from a workplace grudge or a combination of motives.
The New York Times reported that there was no evidence that IS had directed the couple in the attack.
MSNBC is apologizing for providing viewers with a live look-in at the apartment of the San Bernardino, Calif., shooting suspects. The couple married in Riverside that same year and had a 6-month-old daughter.
Farook had no criminal record, and he and his wife weren’t on the FBI’s radar before the shooting.
The pair, who are Muslims, donned dark, tactical gear and masks, arming themselves with high-powered assault rifles and handguns, police said.
Investigators found two relatively new, but smashed, cellphones in a garbage can near one of the crime scenes, law enforcement officers told CNN. “He had everything to be happy”, a friend who attended the same mosque as Farook, Gasser Shehata, told AFP, which also reports acquaintances say the couple were living “the American Dream” and exhibited no outward extremist views or anti-American sentiment. Local police chief Jarrod Burguan said it appeared that the couple were prepared to carry out another attack. And another fed source said authorities are looking into whether Farook was radicalized by worldwide terror suspects.
According to Reuters, investigators think that Malik’s post pledging allegiance to ISIS is a “game changer” in the investigation. The lawyers warned against jumping to conclusions about the attackers, repeatedly emphasizing that the Federal Bureau of Investigation had found no evidence to indicate the shooters were connected with a terrorist group.
Abdollah reported from Washington.
Farook graduated from Cal State University, San Bernardino in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in environmental health, CSUSB spokesman Joe Gutierrez said. Farook’s brother-in-law, Farhan Khan, told NBC News he had begun legal proceedings to adopt the girl and was “very upset and angry” at Farook.
Kuuleme Stephens, 41, told the Times she could hear Farook tell Thalasinos that Israel was not the Jewish homeland but added that the conversation was not exceptionally heated.
