Wii U lifetime sales surpass 10m
The company also says sales of the action game Splatoon, which sold 1.62 million, has “contributed to vitalizing” the Wii U.
With more than 470,000 Wii U systems sold, Nintendo’s home console still hasn’t electrified consumer desire as Wii once did but has now surpassed 10 million unit sales.
Revenue in the latest quarter jumped 21 percent to 90.22 billion yen, as the company’s new line-up of 3DS portable consoles “continued to expand their sales”, it said in a statement.
The company has stressed that the Nintendo NX will not be a replacement for their existing platforms, but a “brand new concept” that we haven’t seen before. Sales in 2012 weren’t exactly great, with the original Wii’s momentum grinding to a halt as Nintendo prepped the Wii U for launch. According to its figures, the 3DS bundle of Puzzles & Dragons Z and Puzzles & Dragons Super Mario Bros Edition sold a total of 7.92m copies worldwide.
Looking ahead, Nintendo has Wii U games Star Fox Zero, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash and Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival to make the money this Christmas time.
Earlier this month, longtime President Satoru Iwata, a force behind some of Nintendo’s greatest successes, succumbed to cancer. It expects to sell 3.4 million for the year through March 2016.
Nintendo beat analyst expectations this week when, rather than recording a loss for the first quarter of its fiscal 2016 year, the company posted a tidy profit.
Nintendo released its first quarter financial report for the period ended June 30, 2015, and it’s mostly positive.
